City & Guilds 2395–01 Level 3 Award in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations Course Overview

The City and Guilds 2395 – 01  Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations course is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out periodic inspection and testing but have experience in inspection and testing. The qualification is not suitable for those with limited experience of initial inspection of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering disciplines or who have been working in allied trades. 

The learning outcomes for the 2395-01 qualification are as detailed below:
  • Understand the requirements for completing the safe isolation of electrical circuits and installations 
  • Understand the requirements for inspecting, testing and recording the condition of electrical installations 
  • Understand the requirements for completing the periodic inspection of electrical installations 
  • Understand the differences between period inspection and initial verification 
  • Understand the requirements for the safe testing of electrical installations which have been placed in service 
  • Understand the requirements for testing before circuits are energised 
  • Understand the requirements for testing energised installations 
  • Understand and interpret test results 
  • Understand the requirements for the completion of electrical installation condition reports and associated documentation
The qualification prepares candidates for the periodic inspection of electrical installations. Allowing candidates to be able to complete the Electrical Installation Condition Report and associated Schedules.  Initial Verification testing will not be covered in this qualification.

The course allows candidates to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications: 
  • Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations (2396) 
There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this qualification. However it would be expected that candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work and Initial Verification Inspection and Testing either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade.

This course also includes an on-line exam of consisting of 40 questions in 1 hour 20 minutes, and two practical assessments, taking 3 hours in total. 

The exams consist of a written exam, duration 1 ½ hours, set and marked by City and Guilds. This exam takes place on a pre-determined date by City and Guilds, and will be on Tuesday evening.  City and Guilds limit the number of exam dates available for each year.

Q - What happens if I fail the course?

A - The practical re-take fee is £150 plus VAT and the written paper fee is £125 plus VAT. PPL will re-arrange assessment times to suit.  The written paper for this certificate is centrally set and marked by City & Guilds.  The paper is only set 6 times a year so candidates will have to wait until the next examination date if they fail their previous attempt.  The practical assessments however can be done anytime.
