Solar PV for New Entrants Overview Solar PV for New Entrants Theory Overview Solar PV for New Entrants Practical Overview Solar PV for New Entrants FAQs

This course has been developed by PPL in order for completely new entrants to the trade to become fully qualified installers of Solar Photovoltaic panels, complete with the necessary tools to become MCS accredited as an optional extra week.

Stage 1 – New Entrant Electrical Course – 4 weeks

Stage 1 of this new entrant course has been specifically designed for people with no electrical experience. We begin with 7 days of basic electrical training in order to build up the knowledge and confidence required to move onto the more in-depth electrical qualifications. This course will be a mixture of interactive theory and hands-on practical sessions. The crucial part of any career is the foundation from which your knowledge grows and because no-one can teach experience, PPL know the importance of delivering first class training that appeal to all learning styles. This is why in the first all-important week you will learn through teaching and by doing. Your foundation course has evolved by picking out the essential parts of different qualifications; it has been developed in part by newly qualified electricians and is delivered by some of the best electrical trainers in the industry.

Stage 2 – New entrant Photovotaic installer’s course – 1 week (Mon-Sat)

After successfully completing stage 1, the course moves on the photovoltaic installation side with.

  • NICEIC Solar Photovoltaic installer course
  • NICEIC Working at Heights
  • NICEIC CoSHH
  • NICEIC Manual Handling
  • City & Guilds (Accredited) Installation of Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Together with the qualifications gained in step 1 the above qualifications will allow you to work both as an domestic electrical engineer and solar photovoltaic installer (subject to approval by relevant competent person schemes and MCS). As a qualified solar PV engineer you have the opportunity to subcontract to an existing MCS registered company or apply to gain MCS membership for yourself. If you want to join MCS then step 3 will help you achieve this.

Total price for both steps 1 and 2 is £3600.00 plus VAT (£4,320.00 inc VAT) with all course manuals, examination and registration fees, and certificates included.  The course also comes with a FREE Metrel tester.

At this point, you will have all the necessary qualifications to work with a company who is MCS registered as a full installer.  If your ambition is to work for yourself, fear not, PPL can take you through the options with a one day MCS pre registration course, followed by a master class in how to effectively sell PV to your potential clients. PPL work with Solar PV installation companies such as SolarPanels4U and can offer candidates work experience in PV, if required, subject to availability.

Stage 3 – MCS Made Simple and PV Sales Awareness (optional additional fee applies)

For those looking to gain MCS membership we recommend the excellent one day MCS Quality Assurance course, providing all the training required to satisfy the requirements of the various competent person schemes and will leave you not only with the knowledge but also with the quality manuals and working templates. The one day PV sales awareness course give a complete overview of how to sell PV in the domestic market.

Stage 4 – Solar PV Onsite Work Experience (1 week)

Candidates wishing to gain additional practical installation of solar PV may request an unpaid work placement. This is normally with ex-PPL trainer engineers in the candidates’ local area. The placement is subject to availability and PPL cannot guarantee this. However it is extremely rare that PPL has failed to organise a suitable placement for candidates, since 2005.

The Solar PV new entrant course includes all certification fees in your course fees.
