  • The exams take place on a laptop
  • If exam is booked within 6 weeks of these dates, there will be an additional fee of 55.00.

Who should attend?
The City & Guilds 239401 Level 3 Award in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations training course is aimed at practising electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require some update of training before going on to other City & Guilds qualifications. The qualification is also suitable for those with limited experience of  initial inspection of electrical installations, such as those entering the industry from other engineering disciplines or who have been working in allied trades.

Purpose of course

This qualification prepares candidates for the initial verification of electrical installations. Allowing candidates to be able to complete the Electrical Installation Certificate and associated Schedules and also the Minor works certificate. Periodic testing will not be covered in this qualification.


What is covered?
From this course you will aquire an understanding of the following requirements:
  • Completing the safe isolation of electrical circuits and installations 
  • Inspecting, testing and recording the condition of electrical installations 
  • Completing the periodic inspection of electrical installations 
  • Differences between period inspection and initial verification 
  • Safe testing of electrical installations which have been placed in service 
  • Testing before circuits are energised 
  • Testing energised installations 
  • Interpret test results 
  • Completion of electrical installation condition reports and associated documentation
The course allows candidates to progress into employment or to the following City & Guilds qualifications: 
There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this qualification. However it would be expected that candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade.

City & Guilds 2394-01 Level 3 Award in Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations Training Course Theory Overview:


The exams consist of a written exam, duration 1 hours, set and marked by City & Guilds.  This exam takes place on a pre-determined date by City & Guilds, and will be on Wednesday evenings.  City & Guilds limit the number of exam dates available for each year.

  • This course involves an on-line exam consisting of 40 questions in 1 hour 20 minutes as well as and four practical assessments taking
    4 hours in total.

Q - What happens if I fail the course?

A - The practical re-take fee is 150 plus VAT and the written paper fee is 125 plus VAT. PPL will re-arrange assessment times to suit. The written paper for this certificate is centrally set and marked by City & Guilds.  The paper is only set 6 times a year so candidates will have to wait until the next examination date if they fail their previous attempt.  The practical assessments however can be done anytime.
