The City & Guilds NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (level 2) has been release by City & Guilds as a replacement for the City & Guilds 6129 Technical Certificate in Plumbing and City & Guilds 6089 NVQ in PLumbing. The 6189 plumbing course has been designed for those people wishing to enter the plumbing industry and gain their full NVQ Diploma in Plumbing & Heating at level 2. Please view our Train to be a Plumber page for the full details on the plumbing qualifications required to become a fully qualified plumber.

People with little or no trade/plumbing experience may benefit from taking the Weekend Introduction Plumbing course first, although no prior qualifications or experience in plumbing are necessary.

The course is full time (Monday to Friday) for 8 weeks - although it may be taken in weekly blocks if this is more convenient for no extra charge. In order to complete the full NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating the student must complete the required onsite evidence, while working.

The course starts with basic pipe work skills and moves onto more complex plumbing tasks, including airing cupboards, bathroom suites, above ground drainage, central heating installation (no gas/oil) and low carbon steel pipework. It also includes 2 extra qualifications; Bpec Water Regulations and Bpec Unvented Hot Water, together with business lectures, tiling and plastering courses.

Theory and practical sessions are mixed on a daily basis with around 3.5 days per week in the practical workshop and the remainder in the classroom. Students are divided into small tutor groups of 6 people led by an experienced plumbing tutor.

The plumbing course also contains regular demonstrations, topics include; power flushing, pipe freezing, floorboard lifting, tap maintenance and many more relevant skills. Plumbing students also receive a free tool kit and safety equipment pack.  This pack contains all the tools and safety equipment you will need on the course. It is yours to take away at the end of the course.

On successful completion of the course there is the opportunity of a one week placement with a local PPL trained plumber in your area.  This part of the course is optional and subject to availability.***

A deposit of £500 is required to reserve a place on this plumbing course with the remaining fees paid in equal instalments in week 1 and week 5 of the course.  Alternatively, course fees can be paid on a weekly basis, to suit .

We may be able to access funding for your particular course for you.  Or you may wish to apply for a Professional and Career Development Loan.  Professional and Career Development Loans are commercial bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Government will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. You will then need to start repaying the loan as you would any other commercial loans product. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries.

As the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, you should make sure you have investigated all the funding options that may be open to you to ensure you take an informed decision about whether the Loan is right for you.  For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Next Step on 0800 100 900.
