City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing course (6129 & 6089) with Bpec Overview City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing course (6129 & 6089) with Bpec Theory Overview City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing course (6129 & 6089) with Bpec Practical Overview City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing course (6129 & 6089) with Bpec FAQs

The City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing Course (6129 & 6089) with Bpec has been designed for those people wishing to enter the plumbing industry and gain their full NVQ level 2 in Plumbing. It is actually two plumbing courses, City & Guilds 6129 level 2 technical certificate (completed at PPL) and City & Guilds 6089 level 2 (assessed onsite while working).  Please view our Train to be a Plumber page for the full details on the plumbing qualifications required to become a fully qualified plumber.

People with little or no trade/plumbing experience may benefit from taking the Weekend Introduction Plumbing course first, although no prior qualifications or experience in plumbing are necessary.

The course is full time (Monday to Friday) for 8 weeks - although it may be taken in weekly blocks if this is more convenient for no extra charge.  The City & Guilds 6129 technical certificate forms part of the City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing and is a mandatory prerequisite. From February 2011 PPL will be offering the new qualification from City & Guilds, the NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, at levels 2 and 3.

The course starts with basic pipe work skills and moves onto more complex plumbing tasks, including airing cupboards, bathroom suites, above ground drainage, central heating installation (no gas/oil), lead work and low carbon steel pipework. It also includes 3 extra qualifications; Bpec Water RegulationsBpec Unvented Hot Water, and Bpec Above Ground Drainage together with business lectures, tiling and plastering courses.

6129 Plumbing course lead working  Plumbing course classroom  6129 Plumbing course workshop

Theory and practical sessions are mixed on a daily basis with around 3.5 days per week in the practical workshop and the remainder in the classroom. Students are divided into small tutor groups of 6 people led by an experienced plumbing tutor.

The plumbing course also contains regular demonstrations, topics include; power flushing, pipe freezing, floorboard lifting, tap maintenance and many more relevant skills. Plumbing students also receive a free tool kit and safety equipment pack.  This pack contains all the tools and safety equipment you will need on the course. It is yours to take away at the end of the course.

Included free of charge is our 2 Day Pre-Part P Foundation Electrics course. This course is aimed at people with limited or no previous electrical experience.  It is designed as a natural introduction to the nationally recognised Bpec Part P Defined Scope Electrical course which students ususally go on to complete after the Pre-Part P Foundation course.   This defined scope course is included as a no-cost option as part of our NVQ2 course**.

After successfully completing a Part P course and registering with a Part P scheme the person will be able to legally offer electrical work in domestic dwellings together with their plumbing work.  The majority of plumbers are asked to carry out minor electrical work such as installing electric showers, central heating wiring or lighting circuits in bathrooms. This work can be sub-contracted out but it means you will be dependant on a sparky turning up. It is much better to be able to offer the work yourself once you are competent and qualified to do so.

**All students can choose between:

  • Bpec Defined Scope Part P Electrical course       OR
  • £500 Accomodation Contribution

On successful completion of the Bpec Part P Defined Scope Electrical course, we also offer an upgrade to students on this City & Guilds NVQ2 in Plumbing course for those who want to qualify as a Full Scope Part P electrician.  This upgrade course includes the Bpec Part P Full Scope Electrical Course (upgrade from Defined Scope) and also the City & Guilds 2382-10 17th Edition Wiring Regulations Course.  This upgrade offer is exclusive to students on the City & Guilds NVQ 2 in Plumbing Course (6129 & 6089) and the Renewable Energy Installer course and is charged at £350 + VAT, which is a saving of over £270.

On successful completion of the course there is the opportunity of a one week placement with a local PPL trained plumber in your area.  This part of the course is optional and subject to availability.***

A deposit of £500 is required to reserve a place on this plumbing course with the remaining fees paid in equal instalments in week 1 and week 5 of the course.  Alternatively, course fees can be paid on a weekly basis, to suit .

The City & Guilds 6129 Plumbing course is part of PPL's no re-assessment fee policy. Should this course take longer than 8 weeks to complete there are no further fees to pay.  We have access to various funding options.  You may wish to consider applying for a Professional & Career Development Loan.  Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning.  You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work).  The Young People’s Learning Agency (YPLA) will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards.  The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses.  You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries.  Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated.  For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Careers Advice on 0800 100 900.

After students have successfully completed their 6129 they will then go on to complete the City & Guilds 6089 Plumbing NVQ which is taken onsite while they are working (and earning).  It normally takes 2-3 visits by a PPL NVQ assessor to complete the NVQ once the 6129 technical certificate in plumbing has been achieved.  These assessment visits are charged at £250 plus VAT per visit and take 1 day to complete each.

**** Terms and conditions apply for the 60% government funding - NVQ 6089 and Part P elements are exempt from this funding - please contact us for more details, 0845 2600 966.

This is then signed off by our NVQ assessors and will count towards your 6129 Level 2.  It is also possible to include digital photos within the portfolio which can be shown to future employers or customers.  As these are signed by qualified assessors, your future employer or customers can be assured that you have reached the required standard.
