Want to become a qualified plumber or renewable energy engineer?  Try before you buy and experience a day in the life of a PPL learner!  We run Saturday open days every month and they are completely FREE!  On the day  you can chat with a tutor, do offset bending with some copper pipe, solder some joints, fit a toilet, the day is structured around your requirements but will give you an excellent idea of what to expect.  Open days are by appointment only typically with around 10 attendees, the day will include your lunch and of course all the tea you can drink!!  Call 0845 2600 966 to book your place

This course is aimed at people who wish to learn basic plumbing skills for their own DIY plumbing, or have a taster of what it is like to be a plumber.

This course is aimed at two groups of people; those who wish to gain additional DIY plumbing skills and those considering a career in plumbing but would like to 'have a go', before committing to a longer course.  There are no previous plumbing experience requirements to attend this course - just a willingness to learn and a good sense of humour.

The course starts with an introduction session and covers some basic plumbing theory in the classroom.  It quickly moves into the workshop where you will be taught about pipework, fittings, soldering, bending and some basic appliance assembly.

Our training groups are small with an experienced plumbing course trainer.  They will show you a task and let you have a go, simple!

The course provides DIY enthusiasts the chance to gain new plumbing skills which they can use for their own projects or family and friends.  The course is not aimed at those wanting to go straight away into being a plumber.  For this we recommend the City & Guilds 6129 with Bpec and City & Guilds 6129 & 6089 NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing.  Although the Plumbing taster day is a good foundation for moving onto these courses.

The course is run on a Saturday with a start time of 10:30am and finishes around 3pm. There is also a free buffet lunch provided.  Booking is essential as places are limited.

PPL Saturday Plumbing course (taster day) practical overview:

The practical course covers some of the following topics:

• Introduction to pipework and fittings
• Compression joints
• Solder joints
• Plastic pipework
• Basic bending
• Outside tap
• Radiators
• First fix pipework
• Taps
• Unblocking a sink
• Washing machine / dishwasher connections
• Kitchen taps

Students are taught in small groups in our modern well equipped plumbing training centre.  They are provided with all the materials, tools and safety equipment required.

The taster courses are relaxed and students are encouraged to ask tutors to cover any extra topics they wish to learn (subject to time permitting).

After completing the PPL Weekend Plumbing Introduction course, students may wish to progress onto the PPL Weekend Bathroom Installation course or the City & Guilds 6129 Plumbing course with Bpec.

A - Yes of course!  You may visit our centre at any time, just phone and we will book you an appointment.  Unlike some centres, we encourage you to talk to our current plumbing students whilst you are here.

Q - I have no DIY skills what so ever! can I come on the course?

A - Yes! We will look after you.  The course is a basic plumbing course, so no DIY skills are needed.

Q - Do you have females on the course?

A - Yes, we generally have a 50:50 mix on the weekend courses.
