This Plumbing course consists of 5 days training and assessment in centre.

The training is broken down into classroom sessions and practical demonstration sessions over the duration of the course. Learner knowledge is checked by a series of both practical and theory assessments and assessed at the end of each training module.

This 5 day Course is to provide training to satisfy the needs of those individuals less experienced or inexperienced in plumbing systems, the extra time allows a more detailed approach to the various areas of learning to ensure that the learner can transfer newly acquired knowledge/skills to the workplace. 

As with the two day course this offering may be tailored to the client company requirements with the proviso that changes are fully discussed and planned in advance.

5 Day Plumbing Installation and Maintenance Course Overview


The course is aimed at people already working in Industry but who have limited knowledge of plumbing systems and legislation.

The main subject areas are listed below: 

  • Identify hot and cold water systems including vented and unvented hot water systems.
  • State the differences between vented and unvented systems in terms of the key components and working principles of the systems, including maintenance and fault finding.
  • List the relative advantages and disadvantages of vented and unvented hot water systems.
  • Understand the legislation covering the installation and maintenance of hot and cold water systems, and its key requirements.
  • State the function and working principles of key components that are installed in hot and cold water systems including maintenance and fault finding.
  • Understand and state pipework design factors, material type and methods of fittings and jointing methods used, including typical processes, operation and component types.
  • Understand and state the working principles of filtration systems, softening & disinfection systems
  • Understand, state and demonstrate the principles of disinfection of a plumbing systems.
  • Overview of environmental technologies including Solar thermal hot water system design, working principles, components, maintenance and faults and rainwater harvesting and Greywater system design, working principles, components, maintenance and faults.

5 Day Plumbing Installation and Maintenance Course Theory Overview


Day One

Consists of classroom delivery and practical demonstrations

  • Identify the key method of operation of hot and cold water systems.
  • State the differences between vented and unvented systems in terms of the key components and working principles of the systems.
  • List the relative advantages and disadvantages of vented and unvented hot water systems.
  • Identify the legislation covering the installation and maintenance of hot water systems in England & Wales and its key requirements.
  • State the function of key components that are installed in hot water systems.
  • Identify the key issues affecting the design and installation of cold and hot water systems.
  • State the typical commissioning procedure for a vented and an unvented hot water system.
  • Identify a typical vented and unvented hot water storage system maintenance procedure.
  • Identify a typical range of faults which may occur with hot water storage systems both vented and unvented also to state the typical diagnosis and actions to rectify the faults.
  • Given a brief recap on the requirements of the Water supply (water fittings) 1999 regulation, Water hygiene, British standards and Acop documents and the relevance to the plumbing industry on a whole.

Day Two

Consists of classroom delivery, practical demonstrations and workshop practical assessments.

  • Identify and understand more complex hot and cold water systems 
  • Understand relative advantages and disadvantages of vented and unvented hot water systems.
  • State the function and working principles of key components that are installed in hot and cold water systems including TMVs and pressure relief valves.
  • State the typical commissioning procedure for hot and cold water system.
  • Identify a typical vented and unvented hot water storage system maintenance procedure.
  • Identify a typical range of faults which may occur with hot and cold water storage systems 
  • State the typical diagnosis and actions to rectify the faults.

Day Three

Consists of classroom delivery, practical demonstrations and workshop practical assessments.
 
  • State the key points of BS 1212 and each part in regards to float operated valves including float switches and solenoids.
  • Understand and state the working principles of float valves, tank couplings, cold water storage cisterns, vents & screens and vent pipes.
  • Understand and state pipework design factors, material type and methods of fittings and jointing methods used, including typical processes, operation and component types.
  • Understand, state and demonstrate how to install/perform maintenance on - 
  • Compression fittings
  • Push fit fittings (plastic and copper etc.)
  • Shower head assemblies
  • Stop valves
  • Gate valves
  • Check valves
  • Non-return valves.

Day Four

Consists of classroom delivery, practical demonstrations and workshop practical assessments.

  • Understand, state and demonstrate the working principles of RPZ Valve (limited information), drain cocks, anti - surge valves and motor valves.
  • Understand and state the working principles of Di - stratification pumps and circulation/boost pumps. 
  • Understand and state the working principles of filtration systems, softening & disinfection including carbon, distillation, sand and reverse osmosis filtration systems.
  • Understand and state the working principles, typical processes, operation and benefits of base exchange process, scale reducers and magnetic water conditioners.
  • Understand, state and demonstrate the principles of disinfection of a plumbing systems.

Day Five

Consists of classroom delivery and practical demonstrations.

  • Understand, state and demonstrate the principles of disinfection of a plumbing systems.
  • Overview of environmental technologies.
  • Solar thermal system design, working principles, components, maintenance and faults
  • Rainwater Harvesting and Greywater system design, working principles, components, maintenance and faults.
  • Review and assessment.
