Heat Pumps provide one of the most energy-efficient ways of heating buildings.  This ground source and air source heat pump installers course has been approved by the Ground Source Heat Pumps Association for operatives within the plumbing, heating and renewable industries, to gain the required skills to design, install and commission ground source and air source heat pump systems. Who should attend?

This course has been approved by the Ground Source Heat Pumps Association for operative within the plumbing, heating and renewable industries. It is designed to provide you with the skills to design, install and commission ground source, and air source heat pumps.

Heat Pumps Installer Training Course Pre-requisities 
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification.
  • AND if not included in the above qualification;
  • Water Regulations/Water Byelaws
  • Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating
  • Part L  



Heat pumps use refrigeration technology, therefore we advise persons involved with the servicing of such units to consider taking the 2 day City & Guilds 2079 Handling Refrigerants course to comply with current legal requirements. PPL work with major suppliers of Air and Ground Source Heat Pumps such as Kensa Heat Pumps.

The PPL MCS Quality Assurance Training and Manual course gives a step by step guide to attaining the MCS standard - (an independant scheme that gives a mark of competency demonstrating that you can install to the highest quality). BPEC Heat Pumps (Ground Source Heat Pumps & Air Source Heat Pumps) Training Course Practical Overview:


This Bpec Heat Pumps training course includes practical aspects that prove that you are competent enough to install Ground Source and Air Source Heat Pumps. The tasks in the assessment / practical are specified by the British Plumbing Employers Council and give candidates a Level 3 QCF (Qualification Credit Framework) qualification.



Subject areas that are included in this Heat Pumps training course practical assessment include:-

  • Planning and preparing for the installation of heat pump systems
  • Installing air and ground source heat pump units (non-refrigerant circuits)
  • Testing and commissioning a ground source heat pump installation (non-refrigerant circuits)
  • Testing the collector circuit for hydraulic soundness using appropriate test equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s guidance, regulatory requirements and industry recognised procedures
  • Commissioning the heat pumps installation in accordance with manufacturer’s guidance, design requirements, client's requirements and statutory requirements and/or industry recognised procedures
  • Completing relevant documentation to record the commissioning activities
  • Undertaking using safe systems of work, routine servicing of relevant system components
  • Completing the relevant service and maintenance records in accordance with industry recognised procedures
  • Obtaining the relevant information required to enable the work
  • Undertaking using safe systems of work, a visual service and maintenance

Multi-choice question Paper 1: 2 hours 15 minutes
Multi-choice question Paper 2: 2 hours 10 minutes
Practical Assessment: 3 hours
