Course Overview for 350 West Granton Road, Edinburgh - PPL @ Edinburgh's Telford College
Only accredited and suitably qualified DEAs (and existing Home Inspectors) will be allowed to carry out the Energy Assessment of the 1 million plus homes which come to the market each year all rental properties with a new tenancy in England and Wales will be required to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
DEAs will collect data on the dimensions, construction, heating and hot water provision of the property, and enter the information into an approved software programme. This, in turn, will produce the EPC. The first part of the certificate is a benchmarked measure of the home's energy performance on a scale A to G, where A is very efficient and G is at the other end of the spectrum.
The second part of the EPC is cost effective recommendations for improving the energy performance of the home, information on renewable energy and recommendations on energy efficient behaviour. The DEA will have to interpret whether these are practical for his/her client.
What is an EPC?
The Energy Performance Certificate will look broadly similar to a certificate on a refrigerator. Its purpose is to record, in a clear unambiguous format, how energy efficient the home is as a building. Using colour charts, the EPC records the current rating and compares this with the rating at which the owner or tenant should aim.
The City & Guilds 6020 / 6361 Domestic Energy Assessor course includes visits to up to 3 domestic properties types required to complete their Energy Assessor course assessments. Unlike some other providers, with PPL candidates will leave the course with up to 3 assessment visits completed and able to register with an appropriate energy assessment body in a matter of days after leaving the centre. This is why the course is 5 days in duration and more intensive.
Feed in Tariffs
Proposed changes to the Feed Tariffs from April 2012 mean that all properties will require to hold an energy performance rating of D or above to claim the higher FIT (21pKW). In order to achieve this the property must first have a Domestic Energy Assessment and if the resulting EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) is below a 'D' rating then energy improvement measures must be untaken. This domestic energy assessor course, together with the appropriate energy assessing scheme registration, allows individuals to perform such energy assessments.
