 Low Carbon Refurbishment Awareness Course Overview

Background

To help candidates understand the different levels of environmental performance given by various interventions that can be made during repair and refurbishment activities. Contractors and specifiers will be able to use sustainability principles to offer cost effective carbon reducing improvements to their clients.

This one day course is intended for those involved in domestic refurbishment, including clients, architects, builders, builder’s merchants,heating & ventilation engineers, Green Deal Installers, etc.

Overview

The course covers typical sites and energy losses from a building, together with suitable products to incorporate into refurbishment activities and shows cost effective carbon reduction techniques that can be used. It also covers aspects of design that may be incorporated into refurbishment activities to facilitate future retrofit.

What’s covered

  • First principles - Climate change, energy use and emissions, u-values, carbon cost effectiveness, overview of refurbishment strategies, economic case for reducing energy use
  • Planning the work - Statutory approvals, funding opportunities, considering future refurbishment
  • Floors - Suspended timber, concrete, draughtproofing
  • Walls - Cavities, External Insulation, Internal insulation, reduction of thermal bridging
  • Roofs - Rafter insulation, loft insulation, loft conversions, flat roofs, services
  • Windows and doors - Glazing performance, frame performance, ratings, door insulation
  • Air tightness - Leakage paths, planning, testing, ventilation
  • Heating - Gas, renewables
  • Water - Overall demand reduction, reducing fuel requirements for water heating
  • Electricity - Demand reduction, micro generation
