IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR SOLAR PV INSTALLATION COMPANIES
PROPOSED NEW ENERGY ASSESSMENT RULES FROM APRIL 2012
DECC has also proposed that all buildings connected to a Solar PV system must have an Energy Performance Rating of ‘C’ or above, in order to claim the full FITs tariff (from April 2013). The proposed changes by DECC mean that all Solar PV installations after 1st April 2012 will require the ‘connected’ building to have an Energy Assessment carried out, unless one has been carried out in the last 12 months. If a building has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D or below, energy efficiency measures must be undertaken to increase this to a ‘C’ energy efficiency rating or above by 1st April 2013. The rating must be increased to a ‘C’ or above for the household to claim the higher Feed In Tariff of 21p /KW, rather than the reduced rate of 9p / KW from 1st April 2013.
Solar Installation companies can either sub-contract the Energy Assessment(s) or qualify themselves as an Energy Assessor. We strongly recommend that Solar PV installation companies undertake the training necessary to qualify them to perform energy assessments. This will reduce their burden on sub-contractors, lower their costs and offer new opportunities when the Green Deal is launched in Autumn 2012.
