Bpec Part P Electrical Course (Full Scope)

This course covers the training and assessment for the Bpec Part P (Full scope) qualification.  It is aimed at people that carry out both defined scope and full scope electrical installation work in domestic premises.  The course assumes no previous electrical knowledge, although some students may wish to complete the PPL Pre-Part P Foundation electrical course first.

From 1st January 2005, the building regulations were changed so that it became illegal to carry out certain types of electrical work in domestic premises, unless the installer was qualified to do so. The installer had to be a member of an electrical competent person’s scheme (with a Part P qualification) or the installation had to be certified by local building control inspectors.

This electrical training course is the Bpec Part P (Full scope) course.  Students cover the Part P defined scope course (Monday to Friday) and then attend a one day full scope upgrade course on the Saturday of the same week.  Previous electrical experience is advised and after completion of this course you may be required to complete the City & Guilds 17th Wiring Regulations in order to register with a full scope scheme.

The Bpec Part P Full scope course covers levels A,B,C and D of electrical work. It allows level A work such as consumer units, completely new wiring installations and outside cabling (SWA).

After successful completion of the Bpec Part P Full scope course, you will be able to join the full scope electrical competent persons schemes offered by ELECSA.

There is a two stage process to achieve compliance with Part P regulations. Firstly, you must hold a valid Part P certificate either Part P defined scope or Part P full scope.  Then you must register to join an approved Part P competent person’s scheme.  Part of the registration will involve an onsite inspection of your wiring and testing ability.  During this onsite inspection, you will be required to produce reference manuals and certificates such as your Bpec Part P (Full scope) course certificate and a 17th Edition compliant multifunction electrical tester such as the Fluke Robin 1652.  You may also be asked to have a current wiring regulations certificate which can be obtained by taking the City & Guilds 2382 17th Edition Wiring Regulations course.

After completing this Bpec Part P Full scope course you will be able to test and certify your own work.  In order to issue landlords (domestic dwellings single phase) safety certificates you must hold a further qualification such as the LOGIC Domestic Periodic testing and certification.

PPL use the Fluke Robin 1652 for all electrical training courses such as the Bpec Part P (Full scope) electrical course, Bpec Part P (Defined scope) electrical course, City and Guilds 2391 electrical course.  All our electrical course students receive a PPL discount voucher for the Fluke Robin 1652 worth £250 off the standard RRP of £800 plus VAT.

The course runs Monday to Saturday (9am to about 4.30pm) with a maximum of 8 students.  The course deposit is £200 and the balance is payable on the first day.

Part P Course (Full Scope) Theory

The first day of the Part P course is a theory day and you will cover the following course material.

In addition to the Part P Course (Defined scope), theory course students also cover:

for the Part P (Full Scope) course.

There is an optional Bpec course manual available from £80 (no vat).  It is recommended reading, but not a mandatory requirement. This can be purchased from our online electrical shop.

Part P Course (Full Scope) Practical

The practical training and assessment for the Part P (Full Scope) course takes place in a purpose built electrical training room.  Each student is issued with a full electrician's tool kit and Fluke Robin 1652 Multi-function tester.

Training takes place on the Tuesday and Wednesday of the course and covers the following topics:

• Supply installation identification
• Circuit protective devices
• Electrical installation – visual inspection
• Safe Isolation
• Pre-work survey and electrical tests
• Exchange component
• Supplementary bonding
• Extension to existing circuit
• Install new radial circuit (ring main)
• Convert lighting circuit to 2 way switching
• Install new lighting circuit
• Electrical tests
• Minor works certification
• Electrical installation certificate
• Install central heating wiring

In addition to the defined scope, practical students will also cover the following on the Saturday of the full scope course:

• Steel Wire Armoured Cable Termination

The training takes place in a relaxed and friendly environment where students are encouraged to discuss the course content with the trainers.  All of our trainers have over 25 years each in the electrical industry.

Practical assessments are held on the Thursday afternoon, all day Friday and Saturday afternoon (full scope assessment).  Students are allowed a second attempt and oral questioning should they fail to pass a particular Part P assessment task.

Q - What is the difference between defined scope and full scope Part P?

A - Defined Scope is "minor electrical work in association with your main trade or activity", Full Scope is "New installations, modifications or extensions to existing circuits".  Basically, defined scope would include a plumbing fitting a new installation of an electric shower.  Full scope would be installing a new ring main or replacement of a the main household consumer unit.
