The HTM legislation provides the best up to date code of practice, providing comprehensive advice on the; legal requirements, design, installation, maintenance, and operation of your facility, helping you fulfil your duty of care. The suite of HTM documents range from HTM 00 to HTM 08, covering everything from medical gases to electrical services and is a critical source of guidance for estates and facilities professionals within healthcare.
As we all know, the current HTM 03-01 Specialised Ventilation for Healthcare Premises went live in June 2021. HTM 03-01 gives comprehensive advice and guidance on the design, installation and operation of specialised building and engineering technology used in the delivery of healthcare. They are applicable to new and existing sites and are for use at various stages during the whole building lifecycle.
Design information for specific healthcare applications has been revised and information on the reason for ventilation given. This edition of Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 introduces the concept of the Ventilation Safety Group in healthcare organisation. This is a multidisciplinary group whose remit will be to assess all aspects of ventilation safety and resilience required for the safe development and operation of healthcare premises.
Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 supports UK legislation to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and promotes sustainable methods of ventilation in healthcare facilities. The HTM’s core principle is that the default method of ventilation should as far as possible be natural ventilation followed by mixed mode (natural with mechanical ventilation), with mechanical ventilation being the last option.
Ventilation is used extensively in all types of healthcare premises to provide a safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff. As an essential component of hospital operation, it states that staff responsible for the running of ventilation systems should be adequately trained to the latest version of the HTM 03-01.
