A second Legionella outbreak in 3 months is currently being investigated by Health Officials in a famed residential area of Central London after a third person fell ill at the apartment blocks.
Early this week Public Health England confirmed it was investigating the recent outbreak of the lung infection which has been linked to bacteria in the water system.
The most recent victim was a visitor who had been staying at his mother’s apartment.
Water samples have since been taken from the outlets of the apartment and they are currently awaiting the results.
Since the start of the year, Public Health England has confirmed 110 cases nationwide, 22 of which have been in London.
The legionella bacteria is transmitted through water vapour, which when inhaled can cause serious respiratory problems, including pneumonia symptoms. The bacteria is robust and can survive in pipework, water outlets and water storage tanks, especially where water has become stagnant from a lack of flow. To ensure outbreaks of Legionnaires Disease such as this can be prevented, a strict regime of water system testing, risk assessment and regular system flushing is vital.
We provide comprehensive courses designed for building managers to help them carry out risk assessments, test for risk factors and prevent the build-up of dangerous bacteria like legionella. Find a list of courses
